Smart Filament Sensor Orbiter 2 Extruder
This is a brand new sensor design that has been greatly improved compared to the previous sensor version.
The first major change is the filament tangle detection feature. Tangled filament is one of the most common causes of print failures. When the filament becomes tangled on the spool, the force required to pull the filament into the extruder increases. This triggers the detection sensor and subsequently runs a clipper macro to pause the print and notify the user of the problem. The detection is activated when the filament pulling force is increased above 1.5-2 kilograms for more than one second. Wear of the PTFE tube can also trigger tangle detection due to the high friction force.
Warning!!! The tangle detection can be falsely triggered by high friction in a long PTFE tube, heavy rotating large filament spools or high printer acceleration with an improperly attached PTFE tube.
The second big change is the signal filtering and plausibility check by the integrated microcontroller. Klipper's native filament sensor support is not the best way to filter out all kinds of misdetections and debouncing of the input signals. To improve this, this sensor is equipped with a small 8-bit microcontroller designed for exactly this purpose. It also controls the RGB input light based on the sensor state in a much nicer way than is possible with Klipper macros.
Last but not least, there is a snap-on collet clip for better PTFE tube locking with an RGB illuminated ring around it that indicates the status of the filament sensor/extruder:
